Mystery of bacteria's antibiotic resistance unravelled

Science Daily - Oct 9, 2016
"Antibiotic resistance is one of the major problems in modern medicine," said Adbelwahab. "Our studies have shown how this enzyme deactivates rifampicin. We now have a blueprint to inhibit this enzyme and prevent antibiotic resistance." Rifampicin ...

Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance

One of the greatest medical accomplishments of the past century was the introduction of antibiotics into the clinic. However, the use of these lifesaving drugs rapidly led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, which have become increasingly difficult and expensive to eradicate. Antibiotic resistance now severely limits our ability to curb infectious diseases and is therefore a major global health concern.

Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine.

Antibiotic Resistance: Challenges and Opportunities, An Issue of Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 1e

by: Robert A. Bonomo MD, Richard R. Watkins MD MS FACP

For many years, physicians and the public assumed that the discovery of new antimicrobial agents would outpace the ability of bacteria to mutate and develop drug resistance. Yet the development of new antibiotics has not kept up with bacterial evolution, especially since the late 1990’s. At that time a multitude of pharmaceutical companies abandoned antibiotic research because of strong economic disincentives. For example, it is challenging for these companies to recuperate the investment (typically in the hundreds of millions of dollars) made in developing a new antibiotic, which is typically prescribed for a few days, compared to drugs that treat chronic conditions like heart disease or mental illness.

One Health and the Politics of Antimicrobial Resistance

by: Laura H. Kahn

Zoonoses―infectious diseases, such as SARS and mad cow, that originate in animals and spread to humans―reveal how intimately animal and human health are linked. Complicating this relationship further, when livestock are given antibiotics to increase growth, it can lead to resistant bacteria. Unfortunately, there are few formal channels for practitioners of human medicine and veterinary medicine to communicate about threats to public health. To address this problem, Dr. Laura H. Kahn and her colleagues are promoting the One Health concept, which seeks to increase communication and collaboration between professionals in human, animal, and environmental health.

Antibiotic Resistance: Understanding and Responding to an Emerging Crisis

by: Karl S. Drlica, David S. Perlin

Authored by two leading investigators, this book presents a thorough and authoritative overview of this multifaceted field of science. Pathogenic bacteria have been evolving and spreading resistance to diverse classes of antibiotics. As a result, we risk losing our ability to control and treat infectious diseases. Understanding antibiotic resistance, therefore, is becoming increasingly essential for a broad audience of healthcare professionals, biomedical and public health researchers, students, and policymakers.
